A Johnson család minden évben nagy családi összeröffenést tart Missouriban. Az idei azonban különbözik a többitől. Nate Johnson ugyanis elvált feleségétől, és az exnej most csak a három gyerek kedvéért tart velük. Nate azt reméli, hogy a hosszú út során sikerül újra összemelegednie az asszonnyal, akit még mindig nagyon szeret. Az út minden, csak nem kéjutazás. A Los Angelestől St. Louisig tartó utat a családi viták mellett tovább színesíti egy dühös rendőrjárőr, néhány felettébb bizarr stoppos, az útszéli vendéglők gyomorrontó kajája és egy betonkeverő, amelyik rosszkor volt rossz helyen.
