Ellen és barátnői eltökélten keresik a szerelmet. A film három éven át kíséri öt késő harmincas-kora negyvenes nő életét, és nyolc fejezetben mutatja be csalódásaikat és örömeiket, könnyeiket és mosolyaikat. Küzdelmeik háttere mind a nyolc fejezetben egy-egy különleges esemény: szilveszteri parti, házavató, meglepetésbuli, szentivánéji mulatság, esküvő, névadó ünnepség, házassági évforduló, illetve születésnap.
