Kaktusz Jacket (Kirk Douglas), a vadnyugat hőskorának aranyszívű bajkeverőjét nem olyan fából faragták, hogy meghátráljon a kihívások elől. Ezúttal azonban olyan kalamajkába keveredik, amelyből nehéz kiverekednie magát. Ahhoz, hogy elengedjék börtönbüntetését, egy korrupt bankárral kénytelen szövetkezni.
